A four-day self-guided hiking journey combining two of the most scenic mountain areas near Brașov — Piatra Mare Mountains and Piatra Craiului National Park — designed for independent travelers who prefer to explore at their own pace.

This experience offers the freedom of independent hiking, helping you feel empowered and connected to the landscape-all logistics are arranged in advance.

Routes, accommodation, and transfers are carefully planned, allowing you to focus entirely on the experience — moving through landscapes, trails, and villages without the pressure of organizing each step.

The Journey

Over four days, the route connects two distinct mountain areas:

  • forested trails and canyons in Piatra Mare
  • Alpine and rural landscapes in Piatra Craiului

This stage offers a peaceful balance between natural environment and rural life, inviting you to feel relaxed and curious about the region.

🗺️ Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Piatra Mare & Seven Ladders Canyon

The journey begins with a hike in the Piatra Mare Mountains.

The route includes:

  • forest trails leading into the mountains
  • crossing the Seven Ladders Canyon, a narrow gorge equipped with metal ladders
  • optional continuation toward higher viewpoints
  • hiking details: 7-8 hours, medium to hard effort, uphill/downhill walk: 800 m/800 m, approx. 16 km
  • terrain: moderate

Accommodation in a local guesthouse.

Day 2 — Transition to Piatra Craiului

The second day introduces the landscapes of Piatra Craiului National Park.

The route combines forest paths and open areas, gradually revealing the dramatic limestone ridge that defines the region.

  • hiking details: 4-5 hours, uphill/downhill walk: 400 m/400 m, medium effort
  • terrain: moderate

Accommodation in a mountain or village guesthouse.

Day 3 — Mountain & Village Landscapes

A full day of hiking in the Piatra Craiului area, combining:

  • scenic trails
  • traditional villages
  • wide views over the surrounding landscapes

This stage offers a balance between natural environment and rural life.

Day 4 — Final Stage & Return

Return to Brașov.

Routes & Waymarking

The routes follow well-marked hiking trails within the Carpathian network.

Waymarks include:

  • colored stripes
  • triangles
  • circles

The paths are clear and easy to follow with the provided materials.

Terrain

The routes include:

  • forest and meadow trails
  • dirt roads with gradual elevation changes

On Day 1, the Seven Ladders Canyon involves ladders and narrow passages through a gorge.

This section is optional and can be skipped if preferred.

Luggage Transfers

Luggage is transported between accommodations, allowing you to hike with a light daypack.
