This trek is classified as moderate in difficulty, with the exception of the challenging section where we may ascend to the highest peak of the National Park. The adventure begins and ends in Brașov, a historic city nestled at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, known for its medieval charm and proximity to some of Romania’s most spectacular natural landscapes.
Each day of the trek, we will hike between 5 and 8 hours, immersing ourselves in the stunning beauty of the region. Along the way, we’ll stop at a traditional sheep farm (from June to September), where you’ll have the opportunity to learn about local shepherding practices that have been passed down through generations. You may even have the chance to sample some of the delicious dairy products made on-site, offering a true taste of the mountain lifestyle.
As we continue, we’ll pass through two authentic mountain villages—Măgura and Peștera—located at the base of the towering peaks. These peaceful villages are steeped in tradition and provide an excellent opportunity to experience the rural charm of the Carpathian foothills. During our time in these villages, we will stay overnight at a local guesthouse, where you can enjoy hearty, traditional Romanian meals made with locally sourced ingredients, offering a true taste of the region’s culture and cuisine.
The highlight of the trek, weather permitting, is the climb to the highest peak in Piatra Craiului National Park, at 2238 meters. Reaching the summit offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys, forests, and mountains, making it a truly rewarding experience. The ascent is challenging but manageable for those with a reasonable level of fitness, and the sense of achievement at the top is unmatched.
In addition to the summit climb, we will also explore the beautiful Zărnești Gorges, a striking natural feature of the region. These gorges are known for their dramatic rock formations and lush greenery, providing some of the most scenic and peaceful moments of the journey.
In summary, this trek offers an authentic adventure, combining the beauty of the Carpathian Mountains, the charm of traditional mountain villages, and the thrill of climbing one of Romania’s most iconic peaks. Whether you are seeking a challenge or simply want to experience the stunning landscapes and rich culture of Transylvania, this trek promises an unforgettable experience!

Outstanding trip in one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world.
We were two couples on this trip. What a fantastic time we had! Our guide Mihai was so knowledgeable and patient. We got rained out one day but made up for it the following day with an epic day up to Shepherd’s Peak. Each day (3 hiking days) was different and equally interesting and exhilarating. I can’t recommend this trek more. Also- planning it with Marian at Active Travel was so great. We did it all over Whatsapp which made it easy to get questions answered etc. She worked with us to make the perfect trip. Have to give a plug to the guesthouse where we stayed in Magura (will do a separate review). This place was organized by the tour and it was also a highlight. The village of Magura is unlike anything I’ve seen- such gorgeous mountains and small farms- forests and fields. We hope to come back one day.Marina
